"Who is the Leader - 404 / Blog No Longer Available" (whoistheleader2)

I was scrolling through my local craigslist and disovered this listing for a 1993 F150 with dual fuel tanks. However, what caught my eye was the rear view mirror. Specifically that it was mounted on the dash.
Here, take a look for yourself.

Obviously my first course of action was to see if this was factory, which I highly doubted.
No, it appears this was a homemade bodge job.
But that got me thinking (dangerous, I know); “what was the last production car to have a dash mounted rear view mirror?”
I have never been in a car with such a mirror placement so I don’t even know where to begin. I’m sure if anyone knows it’s Oppo.

The mirror is just sitting there to show it is included without being fitted.

Is it? It seems like a strange placement but I’m also not sure that it could stand up in that position without being anchored to the dash.

Dash -mounted mirrors are only good for checking your parcel shelf and viewing air traffic. Looks like that one fell off and is just sitting on the dash.

Oh yeah, I remember that. I have seen just a few but never sat in a position where I could gauge their usefulness. It seems like maybe modern cars have higher rear beltlines so the view is more obstructed than in older cars? That and headrests get in the way more.

My guess is the 1971 Citroen DS. It looks like they started window mounting the mirror in 1972.

Huh I recall seeing a late 70s car once in a junkyard with a dash mirror but I can't remember what it was. That is a good guess because that is just about the last of the holdouts.

Agreed. It’s just been left on the dash. The detached mirror and missing climate control knob are clearly visible to show the state of maintenance of the truck.

Thankfully my 66ish Volvo 1800 has the window mount mirror although you can still see the mounting points in the dash for the earlier models.

Really? So most cars were changing over around that time mid model year? Fascinating.
